City of Dumas crews spent yesterday taking down decorations all along Dumas Avenue. The task was not an easy one as it was a cold and blustery afternoon. Goodbye, Candy Cane Lane....until next year.

AMARILLO – More than 2 million feral hogs roam Texas. Managing them will take more than just a few hunters, a Texas AgriLife Extension Service specialist said.

“From 1993-2003, the damage from feral hogs that was reported to AgriLife Extension’s Wildlife Services increased an average of 105 percent per year,” said Ken Cearley, AgriLife Extension wildlife management specialist in Canyon. “The price tag for that damage now is conservatively estimated to be about $52 million per year.”

WOOD PERMITS ARE AVAILABLE
The National Park Service announced Monday it will issue free permits for limited collection of firewood at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.
The permits will be available at the park headquarters in Fritch beginning today. Wood collection will run during daylight hours from Jan. 10 to 25.

The wood is the result of efforts to thin mesquite growing in the North Canyon area between farm-to-market roads 1913 and 3395 to reduce fuel for wildfires.

There are conditions for the permits: They must be visible on a vehicle's dashboard; vehicles must stay on established roads; no more than one cord of wood (two pickup truck beds) may be collected; and no chain saws are allowed.

For more information, call Lake Meredith National Recreation Area headquarters at 806-857-3151.
